May 11, 2001, Newsletter Issue #35: Early Detection is Key

Tip of the Week

Awareness and early detection are your best defense against Melanoma. As you may do self breast examinations each month, so you should examine your skin as well. Is there a new mole or do you have an existing mole that has changed its size, shape, or color? Use a mirror to examine your back or have a caring friend help. It could save your life. If you have any concerns about what you see, call a dermatologist.
I was diagnosed with melanoma last November. It all came about from self examination. I had surgery to remove the mole and I will have follow-up exams by the dermatologist every 6 months. That is why this subject is important to me and why I want to share it with you.
UVA(aging rays) and UVB (burning rays) are the two types of ultraviolet light that are factors in the development of skin cancer. Wearing a sunscreen with an SPF 15 or more is common sense. The days of using baby oil and iodine are gone. Be informed about the dangers of sun exposure. Enjoy the outdoors off hours. Avoid the sun from the hours of 10 AM until 4 PM if possible. And you, too, will be a survivor!
