Who started the the whole gift with purchase idea?

The Gift With Purchase

It's up for some debate as to which cosmetics company first came up with the idea for the “Free Gift with Purchase” or, what some consider “the only time some people ever buy any department store makeup.”

The Estée Lauder website claims that Estée herself came up with the whole gift-with-purchase concept. Estée was a savvy businesswoman and a pioneer in the industry when she started her company in 1946. She was a skincare and fragrance visionary and was never afraid to march right up to a customer and boldly apply some lipstick to their bare lips!

Giving away gifts as a beauty marketing promotion works, as does giving away samples, which most companies try to participate in as well. Many will hand over a free two week supply of foundation just for coming up to the counter and chatting with one of their beauty advisors, so don't be afraid to ask for samples! They will be more than willing to give them to you in hopes of getting your return business.

Are there any hard and fast rules about makeup?

Makeup Rules Are Meant To Be Broken

There are a lot of tips and tricks to use and learn in this book—101 to be exact. But as with any kind of true art form, you can take the rules and throw them out the window if you choose. The greatest creations in any genre sometimes come about when you don't follow the rules. Rules are made to be broken with makeup! Play around with it and have fun. Enjoy the artistic possibilities that you can create on your own face or other's. Find out what works best for you. If you find that you can't stand using makeup brushes and would much rather use your fingers—do it! Or if you hate mascara, don't wear it! Want to use your eyeliner color as a lip liner? Sure! That said, follow my advice or don't follow my advice, but if you stay true to yourself, your natural beauty will enhance anything you do with your makeup.

Do makeup companies have charities they contribute to?

Makeup for a Good Cause

RuPaul once said, “Honey, you are born naked, everything else is drag!” As one of the most visible and famous faces in Drag Queen history, there is no entertainer like RuPaul. In the early 90's, RuPaul became the face of MAC Cosmetics, launching a partnership that raised over $22 million dollars for the MAC AIDS fund. To date, they have raised over $90 million dollars, and you can still purchase their VIVA GLAM lipstick with every single cent of the $14 selling price going to help men, women, and children affected by HIV/AIDS around the world.

Estée Lauder, the parent company of MAC and many other beauty brands, has also been at the forefront in bringing awareness and research dollars for other causes, like supporting the fight against breast cancer. Make sure you check out their pink ribbon beauty products sold during the month of October. Evelyn Lauder's The Breast Cancer Research Foundation (www.bcrfcure.org) has helped over 1.6 billion people worldwide since 1992. In the quest to look good, it's nice to know that by purchasing makeup for a good cause, you are helping to do something good for others too!

Where can I find gothic looking makeup?

Goth Makeup

Traditional gothic-looking makeup is meant to inspire thoughts of vampires. Pale skin, dark lips and heavily lined eyes are the way to achieve this highly dramatic look. Start with your regular foundation, and then dust on a light layer of Tish & Snooky's Manic Panic NYC - Virgin Pressed Powder ($15), which comes in the perfect pale white shade. Powder is the way to go to achieve the look without resorting to using white foundation which can tend to look a little like clown makeup. Then it's on to intensifying your eyes with a liquid eyeliner in, what else… black! The darker the better. Liquid liner tends to look more opaque and strong rimmed around the eyes. Then your lips can be as dark as you want them to be. Manic Panic's matte lip colors ($9.50) include shades such as Black Rose, Blood Red, Kiss of Death (scarlet red), Raven (black), and Tramp (deep purple).

Should I get some permanent makeup done?

Permanent Makeup

Permanent makeup is actually not makeup at all. It's just a tattoo on the skin that is meant to look like makeup. One of the best aspects of makeup is its ability to be washed off. The possibilities are endless with a blank canvas and the different types of looks you can create. Luckily, regular makeup is not permanent. If it were, we would never be as willing to try different colors and trends. We would not even pick up that aqua eyeliner if there was a chance that it wasn't going to come off.

For those needing reconstruction after mastectomy surgery to recreate facial features, or to camouflage scars or burns, permanent makeup might be the perfect solution. It is also helpful for those who have Alopecia and need eyebrows from loss of facial hair. Keep in mind that this procedure should be done by a licensed permanent cosmetics technician. Make sure you see pictures of their previous work, and know that even though it is considered a permanent procedure, fading usually occurs and touch-ups will be needed periodically to maintain the look.

How can I create a beauty mark?

Creating a Beauty Mark

If you aren't naturally blessed with a fabulous beauty mark a la Cindy Crawford, Madonna or Marilyn Monroe, you can create one. This is especially helpful if you have a large blemish to conceal, and you are going to be wearing a decent amount of makeup. This look does not work on a bare face. Most importantly, place the beauty mark within a half inch or inch of the lips to draw attention to that feature. You can always use a dark, medium, or light brown pencil to draw on the beauty mark. Make sure you set it with powder so that it doesn't smudge. Or, you can try a stick-on beauty mark! Hottie Dots ( www.hottiedots.com ) is an easy-to-apply peel and stick-on beauty mark. It comes in three different natural colors in packets of 16 for around $5. They can be applied under or over makeup. Try their Rainbow collection if you want to draw some extra attention to your look!
